I just finished up a cute little DIY project that I wanted to share with everyone. The short version is that I decorated the rim of a jar. It was super simple and added a lot of fun to an otherwise boring jar. The way I did it was pretty half-assed, but it got the job done. I supposed you could search for the “correct” procedure to melt chocolate and all kinds of fancy things, but for me, I just wanted to see if the idea in my head would come out looking the same in tangible life.
Steps To Decorate Jars
In a small bowl, melt down a handful of Hershey’s Kisses (8-10 should do it). Microwave settings will vary, but for me, I put the bowl in for 3 30 second intervals mixing in between each one to distribute the heat evenly. You’ll just want to watch that the chocolate doesn’t burn!
Dip the rim of the jar into the melted chocolate and using a small spoon, spread additional melted chocolate around the sides (about a 1/2 inch). Make sure to keep the jar rim-down or on it’s side so that the chocolate can drip down into the bowl and not further along the sides of the jar. Using the spoon, smooth the chocolate around and remove any excess.
Dip the jar into the plate of sprinkles and spin it around to make sure the rim is coated. Turn the jar on it’s side and slowly rotate it while pouring sprinkles on top of the melted chocolate. This part gets messy because if you don’t get close enough, the sprinkles will start to bounce around all over the kitchen counter!
Check to see that all of the chocolate has been covered in sprinkles, add more if necessary, and place the jar in the refrigerator, right side up to harden. This will take a minimum of 30 minutes. I suggest keeping the jar in the fridge until you are ready to use it.
Fill the jar with milk (I like skim) and start dunking your cookies! The milk will slowly become chocolate flavored and you can lick the sides. It’s a fun way to drink milk too because you’ll get chocolate and sprinkles with each gulp.
This idea can be applied to so many different food combinations. For example, you can replace the melted chocolate with frosting or marshmallow fluff. Or you can swap out sprinkles for marshmallows or broken pretzel pieces. The jar itself can also be filled with whatever you want, like a scoop of ice cream! The whole idea of decorating these jars is to be creative with a functional purpose.
What a GREAT IDEA!!!!
That’s so clever
