Going on vacation is always a lot of fun because you get to take a break from reality.  I really like going on trips to other cities across the U.S and abroad.  Sometimes it’s nice to just take a “stay-cation” and hang around at home for a few days also.  Or, you can do a combination of both.  This is what my mom and I have been doing for the past few summers.  We go on a mini-vacation to a destination that is easy to drive to and spend about three days there.  It’s nice to get away, but also be close to home so there isn’t too much stress dealing with travel plans.

I am currently in Greenwich, Connecticut with my mom for our annual trip.  We visited here last year and really liked it so we decided to come back.  I’ve been having a nice time so far, but there is one part of every vacation that always gets me a little down.  It’s the “in room” hotel food.

A lot of hotels I have stayed in have had great restaurants and I’ve had some delicious meals while on vacation all over the world, literally.  The same thing goes for Greenwich.  My issue is really with the whole “minibar.” situation.  Whether the fridge is stocked with beverages to select from, or empty to use to your own discretion, it always looks dirty to me.  Not dirty in the sense that I can see filth, more like contaminated with the previous occupants’ goods.  This always gets me thinking about the cleanliness of the hotel room I am staying in, in general, and I begin to get completely grossed out by all of my surroundings. I tense up and don’t want to touch anything anymore.  The anxiety can get so uncomfortable that often times, I don’t want to brush my teeth because I don’t want to put the sink water in my mouth.  Of course, knowing the pros and cons of teeth brushing, I eventually end up doing it.

So, what is it about the food left in hotel rooms that makes me so crazy?  When I figure it out, I’ll let you know.  There might be a bag of potato chips available for purchase for a whopping $35.00.  If I don’t end up eating the chips, does the same bag stay in the room for the next occupants?  Does that actually matter and is that something I really need to make an issues about.  Logically, if the bag of chips has not been opened and is not expired, there’s no reason why it can’t stay on the table from the previous hotel guest.  But, there is a part of my brain that is not actually accepting of this statement.  I immediately think that this bag has been contaminated by the people staying in the room before me.  I mean, what could possibly have happened to this bag of chips?  Did the previous occupants dunk the bag in the toilet and put it back?  Probably not.  But try telling my brain that.

After years of traveling and vacationing in all types of accommodations, you’d think that I would have developed somewhat of a higher tolerance for this hotel room food.  Sadly, I have not.  My irrational concerns are still very much alive and well.  I am completely convinced that the bag of potato chips I am currently looking at has been secretly injected with Anthrax.  In an effort to take some of the stress away from my future vacations, I’m actually looking to purchase a “travel size” Hazmat suit, so if you know of any…..
