I kept seeing pictures on Instagram of these awesome looking cupcakes with gooey filling dripping out of the middle. There were all different colors and flavors, but the one I saw most often looked like a birthday cake. This cupcake had blue frosting with sprinkles and the inside was filled with cake batter. When I looked up where these cupcakes were from, I discovered a new cupcake shop called Molly’s Cupcakes.
I decided it was imperative to get my hands on some of these cupcakes, so I made a plan to head to the West Village and stop by Molly’s. I figured it would be easy enough to get to since it is located on Bleecker Street and I know that area pretty well. That was a mistake!
The address of Molly’s Cupcakes is 228 Bleecker Street. When you walk down the street, you can clearly see a dark green awning hanging above an dark wooden door with white writing labeled 228. If you walk in the doorway, there’s a second door that is locked. On the lefthand side is a list with buzzers. I thought it was a bit odd to have to be buzzed into a cupcake bakery open to the public, but what did I know. I was looking over all of the names listed and nothing said Molly’s. I started to get very confused. I knew I was at the correct address, but the place wasn’t there. Thinking that I must be going crazy, I took my phone out to check the address and look on a map. Everything was confirmed. According to the map, I was practically standing on top of this place.
The next logical thought I had was to walk around the block. Maybe the entrance was actually around the corner? Sometimes that happens right? So, I continue west on Bleecker Street, and turn onto Carmine Street to look for Molly’s. Of course, it’s nowhere to be found. I ended up walking in a big circle that spanned about four blocks until I came back to where I started, at the green awning. At that point, I was sweating to death and so frustrated that I just said “fuck it” and decided to head back to the subway to go home. I had taken something like three steps forward when I realized that the giant, bright yellow painted storefront immediately next to the 228 door, was a place called Molly’s Cupcakes. I had been standing in front of Molly’s the whole time that I couldn’t find it. I don’t know what I was doing or seeing or not seeing, but all of a sudden, it was there.
Feeling like a major asshole and hoping that nobody sitting the park across the street had been watching me this whole time, I walked into Molly’s on a mission. The inside of this place is adorable! That is really the only word I can use to describe it. There are tables and chairs to sit in, but there is also a countertop, like a diner. And at the countertop you won’t find your typical benches or bar stools. There are actual hanging swings! Everything is extremely cheerful and colorful inside of Molly’s which I personally find appealing.
When I got up to the counter I saw so many different and beautifully decorated looking cupcakes that all of a sudden it became very hard to choose what flavor to get. I also noticed a sign that said you can create your own cupcake by choosing the cake flavor, frosting flavor, and toppings. Molly’s Cupcakes is a really fun place! After a little bit of time pacing back and forth looking at each cupcake over and over again, I finally made my decision. I picked out a Blueberry-Cheesecake Cupcake, a Birthday Cake Cupcake, and a Cookies ‘N Cream Cupcake. As much as I wanted to eat all of them at once, I felt that it was important to control myself and decided to bring the cupcakes home with me. Once I got home, I had to have a little taste of each one… Yummy! Yummy! Yummy! All three cupcakes tasted amazing and the inside gooey drip was an additional bite of deliciousness. Now that I officially know where Molly’s Cupcakes is located, I will be able to go back whenever I want to get more cupcakes. And as great as these cupcakes taste, not getting lost will definitely be the best part.
