• Another Cardboard Box

11334589_1444418335860429_985713413_nThis past Wednesday afternoon, June 10th, 2015, I had to travel to the Upper East Side of Manhattan for a doctor’s appointment.  I was getting a physical and the absolute ridiculousness of what went on while I was in the office you would not believe.  Without giving away my entire life story, I was at the doctor’s office for a little over an hour past my appointment time because I was drinking water so that I could pee in a cup.

Moving on.  I finally get out of there (two hours after my appointment time) and I am super hungry.  I decide to take a walk over to a frozen yogurt place that I had been wanting to try for a while.  Since it was only ten blocks from where I was, I began making my way over to Chillbox.  A few months ago I had seen some Instagram photos of people eating what looked like ice cream out of a big magenta cardboard box.  I thought it was one of the coolest things ever and had to look it up to learn more.  I found out that it was actually Greek frozen yogurt from a place called Chillbox located on 60th street and 3rd avenue.  Apparently, Chillbox is extremely popular in Europe and is actually a chain.  It has been a little over a year since Chillbox opened it’s first location in the United States and lucky for me it’s a quick subway ride away!

I wasn’t completely sure of what to expect when I got there, aside from Greek frozen yogurt of course.  Chillbox is set up just like every other self-serve frozen yogurt place you’ve been to.  Plus, they have Greek ice cream and coffee.  There are two different sizes of plastic cups for you to put the yogurt in and six self-serve machines.  There is also a large toppings bar with everything from fresh fruit to candy pieces to caramel syrup.  The cost of the yogurt goes by weight, so that you can take as much or as little as you want.  Now here comes my favorite part…  They give you a cardboard box with a hole cut out of the middle to fit the plastic cup of yogurt in.  This keeps the yogurt from melting.  Hence the name, Chillbox.  It is so fun!  I don’t know why, but it is.  I guess everyone likes things that separate them from the pack and walking around with a box full of yogurt will do that.

Once I took all of this excitement in, I had to get down to business and actually get my Greek frozen yogurt so that I could get my cardboard box (secretly I think I wanted the box more than the yogurt).  I added some swirls of strawberry yogurt and a couple swirls of the natural flavor.  I swear, one day I am going to learn to make a perfect yogurt swirl with a machine.  I don’t know how they do it because whenever I try, it ends up looking like a big mess in a cup.  It must be some special wrist action or something.  As I tend to do in most overwhelming food situations, I go for basic toppings.  I plopped on some strawberries, shimmied on some rainbow sprinkles, and drizzled on chocolate syrup.  I paid for my yogurt, and like an idiot, walked away with a stupid smile on my face because I was holding a really cool looking box.  I decided to sit down at one of the tables they had set up outside and eat my yogurt.  Aside from being delicious, it drew a lot of attention.  Almost everyone that walked past me was looking at what I was eating.  Well, it was either that or I had shit on my face and no one was nice enough to point it out.  Regardless, I enjoyed my yogurt and am planning on going back to explore some more of those toppings.  That’s a lie.  I’ll probably get the exact same thing.  I just really want to hold another cardboard box.
