I’m the type of person who has “the usual.” I like to go to the same restaurant and order the same dish each time. Some places are a little more special and have “two usuals.” All in all, I’m a creature of habit. I don’t typically stray to far from my “usuals.” You may be wondering if it gets old or boring eating the same foods at the same restaurants all of the time. I say, “no way!” The consistency is comforting and the likelihood of not enjoying your meal decreases tremendously since you’ve already tried it once before and liked it then. To me, why bother trying something new when the old seems to be working just fine?! Of course, I don’t completely live by these rules and will try new things on occasion. For example, I tried shaved snow for the first time last month! I enjoyed it so much the first time that at each other location I tried it, I ordered relatively similar toppings. A.K.A my shaved snow topping “usual.”
Let me explain… at each shaved snow location, I had the most basic flavor. It was either called Sweet Milk, Original, or Regular. In regards to toppings, all three times I ordered crumbled Oreos. I also had some form of Strawberry, either fresh or pureed each time. In addition to those toppings, at locations two and three, I added whipped cream to the mix. See what I mean? This has now become “Jamie’s Shaved Snow Usual Order.”
Now, that you have a bit of this background information, I can go on to explain the adventure I went on today, while in the suburbs. I was craving my favorite all-time ice cream shop, Twist & Shake, and decided to go over there for a late lunch/snack. The issue I was having today was deciding between my “usuals.” Twist & Shake is very unique in that I have three “usuals” that I often rotate. There would have to be some kind of full moon-planets aligned-Aquarius bullshit happening to get me to eat something other than one of those three options from Twist & Shake.
Option Number 1: Cookies ‘N’ Cream with strawberry topping in a cup.
Option Number 2: Bittersweet Symphony* with rainbow sprinkles in a cup.
Option Number 3: Chocolate Yogurt shake with skim milk and chocolate syrup.
After waiting for the five other people on the line ahead of me to order, it was now or never. The clock was running out. I had to face the buzzer. Game time decision. Insert other sports references here. Through process of elimination I knocked out option number 3 because I wanted food and not a drink. Well, that was about as much of a decision as this 100% pure Libra could make. The scales were even 50/50, so I went with my gut instinct and ordered two separate cups of ice cream. An option number 1 and an option number 2! I took them both home with me so that I could eat one right away and have the other one later on! BRILLIANT!
The question on everyone’s mind must be, “which one did you eat first?” I will tell you. I ate option number 1 first. Would you like to know why? It boils down to science. I can put sprinkles in the freezer and that will still taste okay, but strawberry topping freezes and doesn’t have the same taste or consistency when you try to eat it later on. So there you have it. A breakdown of the inner workings of my mind and the importance of choosing an ice cream flavor.
*Bittersweet Symphony is coffee flavored ice cream with chunks of chocolate and ribbons of chocolate fudge mixed in.
so————-I would go for the coffee flavor myself.
as for you, you are anything but “usual”. in fact you are extraordinary and fun and a whole lot of other adjectives I could list, time permitting.
I love your articles.
p.s. I finally got on your list. it took several tries but here I am.
